What drives the price of a sauna

Six things set the price of a sauna: size, type of heat, timber, glass, extras and access. Size and type of heat move it most.

  1. Size. Bigger rooms need more timber, more insulation and a larger heater. Each extra square metre adds materials and labour.
  2. Type of heat. Infrared panels cost less than a traditional heater with a separate control unit and a dedicated three phase circuit. Hybrid rooms carry both.
  3. Timber. Spruce and pine are the most affordable. Thermo aspen, hemlock and cedar cost more but look better, smell better and stay cooler to touch.
  4. Glass. A full glass front looks spectacular but loses heat, so it needs a larger heater and costs more than a timber wall with a glass door.
  5. Finishes and extras. Salt walls, LED lighting, sound systems, backrests, and a cold plunge next door all add to the total.
  6. Access and electrics. Upper floors, tight stairs and a board that needs upgrading add time and cost.

Built in sauna or a kit from a shop?

Imported sauna kits sell in Dubai for less than a built in sauna, and they suit renters who may move. A built in sauna is made to the exact size of your room, uses better timber, and is finished to match your home. It also includes the electrical work and a warranty on the installation, which a boxed kit usually does not.

What a home sauna costs to run on DEWA

Most home saunas in Dubai cost between AED 12 and AED 70 a month in electricity, used four times a week. Infrared sits at the bottom of that range, a large traditional heater at the top.

Room and heaterPer sessionPer month
Infrared, two person, 2 kW panels1.8 kWhAED 12 to 14
Traditional, small room, 6 kW heater6 kWhAED 39 to 45
Traditional, 2 x 2 m with glass, 9 kW heater9 kWhAED 58 to 67
Steam room, 2 x 2 m tiled, 9 kW generator4 kWhAED 26 to 30

Our estimate. Assumes 17 sessions a month, a 45 minute warm up and a 30 minute session for traditional saunas (heater at full power to warm up, then cycling at about half power), 55 minutes for infrared, and 40 minutes for steam. Priced at 38 to 44 fils per kWh, which is DEWA's 32 and 38 fils slabs plus the fuel surcharge, where most Dubai villas sit for much of the year. VAT is extra. Check the current rates on the DEWA slab tariff page.

How to budget

Add 10 to 15 percent to your starting price for extras you will probably want, such as lighting and a backrest. If you are planning a renovation, build the sauna at the same time: sharing the electrician and the finishing trades saves money.

Questions

How much does a home sauna cost in Dubai?

A built in infrared sauna from Sauna Spaces starts at AED 18,500, a traditional Finnish sauna for a 2 x 2 m room starts at AED 26,500, and a hybrid sauna starts at AED 29,500. Prices include design, supply and installation in Dubai and exclude VAT. Your final price depends on size, timber, heater and finish.

How much does a home sauna cost to run?

Running cost depends on the heater size and how often you use it. An infrared sauna draws around 1.5 to 3 kW and a traditional heater around 6 to 9 kW. Multiply the heater size by your session length and your DEWA tariff to estimate a session.

How long does it take to build a sauna at home?

Most indoor saunas take two to three weeks from design sign off to handover, with two to four days of that on site. Outdoor saunas and steam rooms take longer because of foundations, waterproofing and tiling.

What electrical supply does a sauna need?

Every sauna needs its own dedicated circuit from your distribution board. Infrared saunas usually run on a standard single phase supply. Traditional heaters of around 9 kW often need a three phase supply. We check your board at the site visit and our electrician installs and tests the circuit.
