Outdoor saunas in Dubai: how to build one that lasts
An outdoor sauna in Dubai needs more insulation than one in Europe, a roof with a deep overhang for shade, UV stable timber finishes, sealed joints against sand, a proper concrete or steel base, and an armoured power cable. Built that way, it works all year and is used most from November to April.
Design conceptWhy Dubai is different
Most outdoor saunas are designed for Nordic winters, not for 45°C summers, strong UV and sandstorms. Untreated timber greys and splits in a year in direct sun, and fine sand gets into every gap. An outdoor sauna here has to be built for heat and dust, not for snow.
What we build in
An outdoor sauna in Dubai needs six things a Nordic one does not: more insulation, a shading roof, UV stable finishes, sand seals, a raised base and armoured cable.
- Insulation in walls and roof, so the inside stays controllable and the outside does not cook.
- A roof overhang that shades the walls and the door.
- UV stable finishes on thermo treated timber, which resists rot and movement.
- Sealed joints and door seals to keep sand out.
- A raised base on a concrete slab or steel frame, with drainage around it.
- Armoured cable from your board, buried or run in conduit, and an outdoor rated isolator.
Barrel or cabin?
Barrel saunas look striking and heat quickly, but the curved shape leaves little room for benches and changing. A cabin with a small changing area and a covered porch is more practical in a villa garden. Starting price for an outdoor cabin is AED 42,000.
Approvals
Most master communities in Dubai require an NOC for a new garden structure. We prepare the drawing and specification for your application.
Pair it with a cold plunge
An outdoor sauna by the pool, with a chilled plunge next to it, is the most popular recovery setup we are asked for. See our recovery rooms.
Questions
Can an outdoor sauna work in Dubai's summer?
Yes, if it is built for it. We insulate the walls and roof, add a deep roof overhang, use UV stable finishes and seal against sand. Most clients use outdoor saunas most between November and April, and indoors or in the evening through summer.
Do I need approval to build a sauna?
Indoor saunas in a villa rarely need approval beyond your community's rules for contractors. Outdoor saunas and structural changes may need an NOC from your master developer or community. We prepare the drawings for the application.
How long does it take to build a sauna at home?
Most indoor saunas take two to three weeks from design sign off to handover, with two to four days of that on site. Outdoor saunas and steam rooms take longer because of foundations, waterproofing and tiling.
How much does a home sauna cost in Dubai?
A built in infrared sauna from Sauna Spaces starts at AED 18,500, a traditional Finnish sauna for a 2 x 2 m room starts at AED 26,500, and a hybrid sauna starts at AED 29,500. Prices include design, supply and installation in Dubai and exclude VAT. Your final price depends on size, timber, heater and finish.
